Here are some helpful tips for both first year fashion students starting out as well as prospective CPUT fashion students
- In first year, the main focus is on the basic construction of patterns, garments and design skills. This includes sample pockets, collars, basic skirt, shirt, sleeve and dress.
- Even if your drawing or construction skills are not too good, you attend classes where you learn these skills, so do not feel intimidated by your class mate’s work that might seem better than yours.
- It is important to attend the theory classes. PAY ATTENTION!
- Always try and do your work in class. Avoid going home too early
- Be very responsible when it comes to yourself and your work
- Do EVERY assignment, even if it seems unimportant!
- Always manage your time around school work. Work hard now, play hard later
- You will be needing extra money to buy supplies such as fabric, paper etc. Be prepared to spend a little extra.
- Try and get CAD programs such as Coral Draw & Photoshop and start developing your computer skills.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions. YOU ARE HERE TO LEARN! :)
